Functional neurological disorder (FND)
Do you recognize this?
Maybe you occasionally feel an unexplained tingling in your hand, stumble over your words, or notice that your legs don’t quite cooperate when you’re in a hurry. These may seem like minor issues, but they can really shake your confidence, especially when medical tests don’t show anything conclusive.
What are the symptoms?
Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder (FNS) is a disruption in the communication between the brain and the body. There is no permanent damage, but the “software” temporarily sends the wrong signals to the “hardware.” The pattern and severity of symptoms can vary greatly. Examples include:
-
Jerking, tremors, or noticeable nerve twitches in the face, hands, or legs
-
Brief episodes of dizziness or a foggy head
-
Difficulty holding a pen or fastening buttons
-
Sudden loss of muscle tone, like “collapsing” at the knees, or temporary paralysis
-
Tingling or numbness in fingers and toes that comes and goes
-
Blurred vision or trouble focusing when fatigued
-
Speech issues such as stuttering or word-finding problems under pressure
-
Balance and coordination difficulties
-
Sensory disturbances (tingling, numbness)
-
Unexplained fatigue or the feeling that your body is “out of sync”
These symptoms can have a major impact on daily functioning and self-confidence, which in turn increases stress levels.
Familiar situations
“My hand trembles just as I’m about to pour something.”
“When I’m stressed, I get a foggy feeling in my head.”
“I trip more often when I’m in a rush, but I walk fine at the physio clinic.”
If this sounds familiar, know that FNS—regardless of its intensity—is treatable.
What causes it?
The exact cause of FNS is still unclear. What we do know is that it tends to involve a combination of factors: long-term overload, unresolved emotions, past injuries or illnesses, and a nervous system that remains on high alert. Sometimes the brain chooses a shortcut to protect itself—temporarily reducing or disrupting certain functions.
Our approach: physical and mental, tailored to you
Psychosomatic physiotherapy addresses FNS on multiple levels:
Safe (re)movement
We practice simple actions like writing or climbing stairs in small, manageable steps to help rebuild trust in your body.
Improving body awareness
Through targeted awareness exercises, you learn to recognize early signals of tension or fatigue—before they lead to shutdown.
Regulating stress and emotions
We connect movement with breathing, relaxation, and mindset techniques to bring your brain and body back into sync.
Self-management at home
You’ll receive practical tools such as graded activity plans, pacing strategies, and short exercises you can do between work or study tasks.
What does a treatment path look like?
Intake and analysis
We map out your symptoms—from subtle hiccups to more challenging “off days.”
Active training
We refine motor skills, balance, and coordination at a pace that works for you.
Coping and coaching
We explore your personal triggers and build in stress buffers throughout your daily routine.
Evaluation and consolidation
Together, we ensure the progress you make becomes lasting, reducing the chances of setbacks.
Not the end
FNS doesn’t have to mean the end of doing the things you love. With the right guidance, you can begin to stretch your limits rather than be held back by them. Does this approach feel like a good fit for you? Feel free to get in touch for a no-obligation introductory session.
